From Ben Eby

How Can Photographers help with Climate Action?

Like many photographers, I eventually found myself taken with a deeper understanding of the camera, using it as a tool to create considered images. Initially, I became consumed with skills development, acquiring the right equipment, and practicing techniques needed to fill this artistic void – in my own unique way. Paired with a parallel interest in geography and travel, I’m always reaching to explore the world at each available opportunity.

However, recently I have started to think from slightly different angle – Do my photography habits and routine result in a positive net benefit towards our planet - such as contributing to climate action, excessive tourism, pollution etc.? And by extension, are fellow photographers involved; and in what ways?

During my presentation I would like to share with you some of my past work, as well as some recent projects which have helped me to think about these questions in particular. I’ll share a few perspectives from professionals whom I’ve looked up to for inspiration. I’d like to openly discuss what projects your members might be engaged with - as well as their feelings towards the impact of their work.

I’m hopeful to leave your members with something to consider – we all should be involved in climate action -

in a small way.

Introduce ideas that may help members to become involved - providing mutual benefit to themselves; and the earth.

3. Discussion about Photography and Environmental Impact/Ethics

Open a discussion about the impacts that photographers make on the environment, such as travel, over-tourism?
How is this balanced with the idea that your images may inspire?

After 39 years of working elsewhere, Nina Kirienko is now a photographer, and graduate of Durham College’s 2-year Digital Photography Program.

Nina specializes in fine art, architectural, landscape and event photography. The world is full of
fascinating natural and man-made landmarks, many of which tell compelling stories of survival or imagination or both. Her aim is to find and photograph as many of them as she can. When she does photograph people, she most enjoys portraying them in a place or situation that inspires them.

Nina Kirienko lives just outside Toronto, Canada. Nice weather will find her in the garden or taking pictures or both. Her goal for the coming year: learning to love winter too (or at least find more ways to escape it!).

From the peaks of the Canadian Rockies to iceberg-laden seas off the coast of Greenland, Paul’s journey to capture the “under-documented” is a testament to his passion for exploration, his creative vision and fierce sense of determination. These qualities, combined with his pursuit of fresh perspectives and a deep love for the landscape, have resulted in an ever-growing portfolio of cutting-edge images.

Whether it’s wading waist-deep into a glacier-fed lake or chasing auroras from dusk til dawn, Paul is known for an adventurous spirit that draws him to the extraordinary. Highlighting his collection are his signature self-portraits, epic mountaineering moments, dreamy astrophotography images, as well as a window into some of the most remote corners of the planet.

Paul’s images have been featured on countless book covers and in a variety of highly regarded publications, including National Geographic, Maclean's, Alpinist, the Huffington Post, The Guardian, Canadian Geographic, Islands, PhotoLife, and explore magazine. His client list includes leading national and global brands such as Canon, Apple, Dell, Arc’Teryx, Panasonic and MEC.

A prolific adventurer, Paul’s explorations have taken him to all seven continents, as well as to each of Canada’s provinces and territories. In the Canadian Rockies, Paul has hiked extensively in the backcountry and photographed from the summits of countless peaks. His adventures abroad include a 1400-km unsupported double-crossing of Iceland on foot (2004), which is believed to be the first of its kind, and a 1488-km solo crossing of the South Island of New Zealand (2007). He has also explored such destinations as Antarctica, Norway, Svalbard, Nepal, Greenland, the Caribbean, Niue, French Polynesia, Namibia, the Faroe Islands, Baffin Island and the Torngat Mountains.

Paul has published six books (published by Rocky Mountain Books) including two coffee table style books of photography, Summits & Starlight: the Canadian Rockies (2013) and The Canadian Rockies: Rediscovered (2017), as well as a series of four photo/travel books about the Canadian Rockies. His book on aerial photography in the Canadian Rockies is due for publication Spring 2021.

Paul lives in Banff, Alberta, with his wife, writer Meghan J. Ward, and their two daughters.

BIO:

Andrew McLachlan is a freelance photographer/writer from Ontario, Canada. For as long as he can recall, he has been fascinated by the natural world. Andrew’s photography became an extension of that love. If he did not own a camera, he would still be found hiking along dense boreal forest trails, canoeing through wetlands, and observing all that nature has to offer. Extensive travels throughout Ontario have resulted in a large, diverse collection of images that feature landscapes and the flora and fauna of the province. Andrew’s first eBook “A Photographer’s Guide to the Ontario Landscape” is the first ever-comprehensive guide to photographing Ontario’s vast and varied landscape. While this eBook is about photographing the Ontario landscape, Andrew has also scattered dozens of tips throughout that will guide you to creating stunning landscape imagery of your own, wherever you may live. Andrew’s presentation will take you on an in-depth journey through the vast and varied terrain of Ontario. Become inspired, gain the knowledge, and create stunning imagery in your own ‘backyard.’ This presentation is based on Andrew’s first eBook published by Arthur Morris/Birds As Art books.

 Presentation:

Take an in-depth look at the landscape and wildlife found within Ontario and throughout the world. High-quality and dramatic imagery throughout the presentation inspires and educates the audience on various tips and techniques that Andrew uses in the field, on a daily basis, to create inspiring photographs.

David M. Cobb is a professional nature, travel, and garden photographer. He has a fondness for long-distance hiking and photographing Japanese gardens. His long walks have given him an appreciation for the landscape and wilderness and his Japanese garden images make up his books Quiet Beauty: Japanese Gardens of North America and Visionary Landscapes: Japanese Garden Design in North America (Tuttle Publishing). His newest book is with the Photo Cascadia team of photographers and is called Oregon My Oregon: Land of Natural Wonders (Timber Press). “My goal is to capture the wonders I see in nature for the enjoyment of all those with an eye for the extraordinary.”

Photography and digital art are Gareth’s artistic releases. After taking up photography after a career
as a forensic scientist, Gareth has been able to bring his imagination, vision and inquisitive mind to
visual life.

Gareth’s art mostly explores bold abstracts or unique perspectives that are created from his original
photographs or digital art pieces. Gareth uses both monochromatic and colour perspectives in final
images as he believes they evoke quite different emotions in viewers.

By looking to connect images to viewers – and in these uneasy times – Gareth wants to balance life.
He wants to present moments of beauty, quiet joy or intrigue in balance with the need to draw
attention to important issues. Everyone needs a break from the unending negative news all around
the world and Gareth attempts to give people a breather from the stress of today’s world. This is not
to say he doesn't bring difficult issues into his art - but Gareth is convinced that balance is the critical
issue, especially as for most of us, our worlds are not in balance. He hopes his art helps to heal this
disparate world through creative expressions, thoughtful moments and visual enjoyment or
challenge.

Gareth never says no to an image, be it traditional or not, be it something he’s created or captured,
but simply because it shouts out to him &"Look at me". He’s photographing the world with all its
wonders and creations, big and small, that simply make him stop and look, or think, or smile, or feel
and then he puts his take on it. Gareth’s images are that gift - a moment to look, think, smile or feel
whatever the image calls up in you. He lets his curiosity fuel the exploration of the world and from
that abstract, nature, urban and imaginative images arise.

Gareth believes that whenever viewers purchase or comment on images, they connect with him.
Often that connection is the breather he wants to provide, he’s touching people, reaching them with
his images and that is what inspires him.

Mike has been taking pictures ever since the purchase of his first film camera at age 16, but it wasn’t until his very first Milky Way photo a few years ago that the spark was truly lit, and he’s been hooked ever since. From techniques learned through astrophotography, he began experimenting with all aspects of long exposure night photography, both in nature and the city and has been thrilled to share his techniques with other eager photographers over the past few years at several club presentations.

When not chasing stars and urban landscapes by night, Mike is the president of Hamilton Scenic Specialty Inc., a company specializing in creative fabrication projects for the entertainment industry. He has been featured in the Hamilton Spectator, Hamilton Magazine, PhotoLife, InSpades Magazine and Urbanicity, and his work has appeared in solo shows at the Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts, group shows, the cover of the novel ‘The Capacity for Infinite Happiness’, and numerous private and corporate collections. You can find his work for sale at the Hamilton Store on James Street North in Hamilton or can be arranged through his website at www.mkimage.ca

Mike’s presentation tonight will touch on the 3 primary types of astrophotography but will focus in on single exposure wide angle landscapes. Discussed will be recommended gear and settings, checklists and planning which will provide a solid foundation for not only dark sky images, but long exposure photography in general. The presentation will be packed with tons of images and a few stories along the way.Alabama Milky Way

Presentation :

Photographers like to present themselves as gurus.  Masters of light. True professionals who approach every situation from a place of 100% preparation.  Sometimes, we like to think we walk on water.  In this humorous and honest presentation, Dave will share some of the many moments in his career when it didn't go quite as planned.  From horrible failures to crazy happenings, Dave will share some of his embarrassing stories from his years as a traveling assignment photographer.

About Dave:

I am a photographer, a dreamer, and a documentor. I am a writer, an explorer, and a purveyor of beauty and light. I am on a continual journey to seek out and capture the beauty of existence- whether it's the most extreme and pristine environments in our world, or the beauty of humanity.

I am a creative who tries to avoid labels and enjoys, first and foremost, storytelling with my photography. Using time, place, and moments with others - my aim is to further an appreciation for the fact that we all live in a shared space. And that there is far greater good to be appreciated in this world than bad.

In addition to living throughout northern Canada for much of my life - an area of Canada that I have worked hard to document and share with audiences, I – along with my beautiful wife, Erin, and our three children – have also lived in Asia and have traveled extensively through both the many provinces and territories of our native country and numerous countries abroad. I now live proudly on Prince Edward Island on Canada’s East Coast, and am a child of the sea.

Bio

From an early age photography has always been a passion of mine .The creative process was intriguing to me as well as the power to capture a moment in time. Photography was more than black and white, it was being able to see in colour. We have a responsibility in this world to record and expose the beauty as it is. Photography has evolved but will always remain pure in my heart .My journey began in South Africa and through the lens I saw a divided nation. Behind the glass Photojournalism was a vehicle to the struggle. Acquiring a National Diploma in Photography [Pretoria, South Africa ] , a brighter future was seen in the viewfinder in Canada's uninterrupted beauty of a nation of Canada where I continue to be inspired to create.

Artist Statement

I am an Artist,I create because this is what I believe I am meant to do.

When I am creating, I feel a sense of exhilaration and know that this is who I am.

The feeling of comfort and enthusiasm is what drives me to challenge my creativity.

The best part of what I do is to create photographs that I am proud of, defining a subject and portraying it to the best of my ability .I believe I have been given the gift of being able to see images and visualize the end result.

My eye is constantly searching for images looking for patterns, textures and how the light is affecting the subject. I visit the subject and admire and respect its beauty, then I dissect it looking at every possible angle to portray it at its best.

I fall in love easily with my subjects and have a feeling of attachment and leave with a lonely feeling of detachment.

I am happy when I feel I have depicted it at its best, and sad when I have failed and this failure brings me back to the subject and the challenge of creating the image that I set out to do and proud of.

I don't always succeed but learn from my failures and my peers.

I am euphoric when I am photographing, and the sense is heightened when find the right angle of the subject.

I have been creating for over 35 years and through time and my journey had led me to architectural photography and this genre of photography is where I feel at home.

I continue to challenge myself by shooting every day and putting myself out to the world and the constant challenge is what drives me

I have so much to learn and it’s the journey is what inspires me.

With a career spanning more than a decade, Trevor Godinho is an internationally recognized artist and published photographer, his work gracing the pages of Vogue Italia, Elle Canada, Men’s Health Australia, Sports Illustrated, Forbes, Playboy France & USA, FHM France & India, and much more.

His skill, vision, and passion for his art have led him to travel and establish a reputation in Toronto, New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, London, Milano, and Perth – putting him and his camera in front of notable personalities and Hollywood’s leading men and women. In 2017, Trevor was named the Canadian brand ambassador to Elinchrom Limited (based out of Switzerland).

In addition to photography, having graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree, Trevor’s creative range also includes painting, sculpture, and design. His mastery of these disciplines has led to his work being exhibited at Coldstream Fine Art and the Gardiner Museum in Toronto.

Trevor continues to mentor the next generation of aspiring photographers and artists, who he hopes will continue to tell human interest stories with vision and expressiveness. Trevor is an active supporter of both local and international charities, including NATO Association of Canada, Jays Care Foundation, U For Change, Artscape, and Big Blue Ocean Cleanup.

Trevor currently resides in Toronto, Canada.

We would all love to have 12-24 hours with a subject in the idea shooting situations but that rarely ever happens. Capturing portraits is all about the right moment and making use of your time with the subject. In my talk I will dive in to my process of capturing some of Hollywood’s well known faces, while giving you a bit of background on my journey and where I am aiming to go.

Macro Photography, for the purpose of this talk, is defined as images a nature photographer can easily create with standard macro lenses, or extension tubes.

The size of the subjects comes with various unique opportunities to control composition and lighting, as compared to shooting landscapes. Some of Peter’s favorite approaches are demonstrated.

Peter’s program is concluded with a short AV entitled: “The World Laughs in Flowers”.  This AV presents flower images mixed with images of landscapes in which they can be found.

Peter’s Biography.

Peter’s interest in photography was fueled early on by his interest in the production of AV presentations. His 3-projector, medium-format shows were seen in many places in North America, and “Strength In Beauty” was presented to close the very first meeting of the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) in Fort Meyers FL.

Peter is an associate of the New England Council of Camera Clubs (ANEC) and an honorary member of the Mississauga Camera Club and the Don Mills Camera Club.

Since his retirement from medicine, Peter has been active in competition judging and delivering workshops and presentations to Camera Clubs throughout Ontario.

As an Artist, he uses a medley of traditional & digital media including illustration, sculpture, photography and digital painting. His focus is the layering and juxtaposition of elements to capture mood, create texture and present exciting new perspectives for common objects and environments.

Jason uses photography to capture moments and tell accurate stories… But it’s the manipulation of the image and the twisting of reality that really captures his interest. In his presentation, Jason will talk about his work as both an Educator and Photographer and will discuss how and why he might modify a photo using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Altering, manipulating and Frankensteining an image might be sometimes seen as controversial, but Jason isn’t afraid to bend what we see in order to create something new and manipulate what we expect.

Deborah Samuel was born in Vancouver, Canada. Her family moved to Toronto and then to Ireland before she was 14. She studied art in Ireland at Limerick College of Art and Design and then returned to Canada to study photography at Sheridan College.

Deborah Samuel was quickly recognized for the distinct style of her fashion photographs and for her intuitive and intense portraits of celebrities, musicians and writers like Leonard Cohen, Margaret Atwood, Rush and Queen Noor, while she refined her personal work and exhibited extensively. Professional opportunities required time spent in New York, London and Los Angeles before she ultimately decided to settle in LA where she became an in demand editorial portrait photographer. Deborah Samuel worked for magazines such as GQ, Rolling Stone, Esquire, Spin and Entertainment Weekly, in addition to directing music videos for musicians and bands for numerous record companies.  Concurrently, in the galleries, Deborah Samuel’s photographs of nudes explored the pursuit of perfection in the media age- a prescient topic. Later her work evolved into formal portrait studies of animals and nature.

In 2012, The Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto exhibited ELEGY, a poetic solo exhibition of animal bones.
In 2017, The Gardiner Museum, exhibited ARTIFACT, an exhibition of strikingly creative photographs-elements of the divine.

Deborah Samuel currently lives in Prince Edward County, Ontario where she keeps a studio, Mac, her Jack Russell and Crow, a Spanish Mustang. She shows her photographs in the United States, Canada and internationally. Her work resides in the collections of the Royal Ontario Museum, Winnipeg Art Museum and Santa Barbara Art Museum as well as numerous private and corporate collections. Deborah Samuel has lectured and led photography workshops throughout North America. She has published three books, Dog and Pup, a collection of canine portraits, and The Extraordinary Beauty of Birds: Designs, Patterns and Details.

An award winning photographer and photo educator. Primarily interested in landscapes, he travels the world seeking out beauty in those wild and remote places on earth that still remain untouched by civilization and where nature commands ultimate attention.

Self-taught as a photographer, he spent time with Freeman Patterson, Canada’s renowned photographer, to learn the art of making great photographs. His training as a graphic designer continually shapes what he sees through the lens in order that elements such as light, shape and colour all work in harmony. His never-ending search for off-beat adventures have led him to explore the Himalayas of Nepal and Ladakh, along with South America’s Patagonia. He feels right at home paddling his canoe or hiking in his backyard, the country of Canada.

As a photo educator, his goal is for students to come away with not just better photographs, but a better understanding of photography, better compositions and most importantly, a skill set they now have and can use on future adventures.

With the rapid advance of digital camera technology, today’s cameras are capable of producing images that were not possible even just a few years ago. This talk is designed to show you how to get started with taking photos of the night sky.

Topics covered:
• gear requirements
• planning your shoot
• camera settings
• finding focus and getting sharp images
• calculating exposure
• shooting star trails
• light painting techniques

Neil is a Toronto-based conservation photojournalist and visual artist working to express the inextricable link between people and planet. His work is deeply rooted in a documentary approach that bears witness to humanity’s ecological footprint–the impact of human activities on nature. This work is principally carried out in protected places that celebrate pristine wilderness and in places in peril that draw attention to habitats that still need protection.

Neil collaborates with domestic and international publications, NGOs, charities, corporations, philanthropists, Indigenous nations, fine art galleries, and with a growing community of online advocates who align with his values.

From a very young age, Arni has had great admiration and respect for the great outdoors.   Since his retirement a few years ago, he has been able to spend the time to improve his photographic skills in the field and in the digital darkroom.  As an award winning wildlife photographer, naturalist and conservationist, he is proud to have had his images published in conservation-themed, international journals including the prestigious Birdlife Australia, Wild Seed Project in Maine, National Audubon Society and Canadian Geographic.

His goal is to tell Nature's story by capturing unique one-of-a-kind images that will resonate with the viewer, stir the soul, invoke an emotion or perhaps stimulate a memory.  The final compositions capture a fleeting moment, one that portrays the beauty, simplicity and fragility of nature.”

Dr. Ron Goodlin is known as a conservation-wildlife photographer from Thornhill Ontario Canada.

After slowing down his career as a Cosmetic Dentist, he has spent much of his time travelling the world to photograph wildlife that is in danger of extinct from the perils of mankind.

“My photographic vision is to create natural but artistic images that will be engaging, and appeal to the general public,  thus helping to bring the story of these endangered animals and perils to our natural landscape, to the forefront, creating awareness the effects of climate change, pollution, urban sprawl poaching and industrialization.”

Ron hopes to institute a positive change to our world through his photography.

Leif’s passion and inspiration for photography is life itself. Being at a happy and satisfied point in his life, he sees things around me more clearly, and often differently, than he would without a camera up to his eye. Traveling and photography has given him the opportunity to see, appreciate and capture many beautiful places and wonderful moments in life around the world and enjoy several life-changing experiences. The entire process, from image capture through digital processing to printing and preparing his images for exhibit, is fascinating, relaxing and fulfilling.
